After the recent successful installation of a 31-tonne bridge girder, Stage 2 of the Narellan Road upgrade in south west Sydney is a step closer to completion.
The Australian and NSW governments are funding the $114 million upgrade of Narellan Road to reduce congestion, improve safety and reduce travel times.
“Narellan Road is a key road transport corridor servicing south western Sydney and this upgrade is necessary to ensure traffic keeps moving as the area grows,” a Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said.
“Work started on Stage 2 in January last year and is expected to be finished by mid-2018, weather permitting.
“New lanes are being built and the existing bridge across the Hume Motorway is being widened to create three lanes in each direction.
“The bridge girder is one of three to be installed at the Narellan Road bridge across the Hume Motorway at Campbelltown.
“Each girder weighs about 31 tonnes and is nearly 21m long, and was transported from the pre-cast facility at Newcastle.
“Once the final girder is in place, work will focus on building the concrete deck and safety barrier installation.”
