The NBN Co Board has appointed a new CEO following the resignation of Stephen Rue earlier this year.

Ms Ellie Sweeney has been appointed CEO of NBN Co for a term of five years.

Ms Sweeney has more than 20 years of executive experience in the telecommunications sector, including as CEO and Chief Operating Officer of Vocus Group, and over ten years at Telstra.

Federal Minister for Finance, Katy Gallagher, said, “Ms Sweeney has demonstrated strong leadership qualities and has decades of experience leading transformation in the telecommunications industry.

“Ms Sweeney’s leadership will help NBN Co continue its work delivering fast, reliable and affordable connectivity to families, communities and businesses, building a more connected and prosperous Australia.”

Ms Sweeney brings a strong understanding of NBN Co’s mission to provide fast, reliable, affordable and secure broadband services to Australians, and the industry and regulatory environment within which NBN Co operates.

Ms Sweeney will replace Philip Knox, who has acted as NBN Co’s interim CEO since May 2024, following the resignation of Stephen Rue.

Mr Knox will return to the role of Chief Financial Officer once Ms Sweeney commences as CEO.

The NBN is critical national infrastructure, underpinning economic activity and productivity growth across Australia.

Federal Minister for Communications, Michelle Rowland, said the Federal Government is investing to support NBN Co to deliver network upgrades and improved technology to meet the growing connectivity needs of Australians.

“Our goal is to narrow the digital divide across Australian communities, and ensure we have world-class digital infrastructure to support a Future Made in Australia.”
