Construction is underway on the new Renal Health Unit at the Kings Meadows Community Health Centre, following the completion of demolition works on the former Joan Marshall building.
Main works are being delivered by Shape Australia, with construction commencing on site in January. The new facility is expected to be completed by the end of the year, with renal dialysis services to begin shortly after.
The redevelopment is supported by a $10 million contribution from the Federal Government through the Community Health and Hospitals Program.
The design has been informed by consultation with staff, patients, carers and a Consumer Advisory Group, ensuring the facility meets community and clinical needs.
Once operational, the new unit will expand capacity from 15 to 18 dialysis treatment bays, helping meet growing demand for renal services in northern Tasmania. The existing Community Health Centre will continue to provide allied health and dialysis services until the new facility opens.
Tasmanian Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Bridget Archer, said the project will significantly improve local access to renal care.
“The Renal Health Unit will feature light-filled spaces, dedicated staff areas and improved access to the broader Community Health Centre,” Archer said.
Federal Member for Bass, Jess Teesdale, said the investment would improve access to care closer to home.
“This new unit is a game-changer for northern Tasmania, giving patients access to life-saving dialysis in a modern, purpose-built facility,” Teesdale said.
The Department of Health will continue to provide updates as construction progresses.
