Construction of Sydney’s WestConnex New M4 has made a significant progression, with the completion of the Concord Road bridge.
New M4 Project Director, Terry Chapman, said the new bridge forms part of the Concord Interchange, which will open in-line with the New M4 tunnels.
“The Concord Interchange is a major feature of the New M4, providing access to the twin tunnels from Concord Road in both directions, as well as access to the widened M4,” Mr Chapman said.
“The 200m long Concord Road bridge is a key component of the interchange which will enable motorists to bypass the heavily congested Concord and Parramatta Road intersection to head west on M4 via a direct and traffic light free route.”
Mr Chapman said there are currently more than 2,000 people working on the project, with the New M4 on track to open next year.
“With tunnelling completed earlier this year, work has turned to the mechanical and electrical fitout of the tunnels, where there are more than 1,000 people allocated to this work,” Mr Chapman said.
“This massive infrastructure project is also helping to support local business, with almost 600 contracts signed to date with Sydney suppliers.
“Surface works on the New M4 are almost complete and the impacts in these areas have decreased significantly, with only residual works continuing this year.”
The $3.8 billion New M4 tunnel is the first underground section of WestConnex, which will connect to the widened M4 and extend it via twin tunnels, three lanes in each direction, from Homebush to Haberfield.
The express underground route allows motorists to bypass up to 23 sets of traffic lights. It is estimated that around 10,000 trucks a day will be taken off Parramatta Road.
