Legislation has passed in the Queensland parliament, which will see the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator (ONRSR) extend its rail safety reach to Queensland.

The Australasian Railway Association (ARA) has welcomed the legislation.

“This is a historic day where we will see all jurisdictions joining forces to work under the ONRSR umbrella to progress rail safety across Australia,” said ARA CEO, Danny Broad.

“The ARA has pushed for a single national rail safety regulator for a decade and it is fantastic to see another piece of the jigsaw go into place.

“The Rail Safety National Law (Queensland) Bill 2016 reform is important for the rail industry as it will bring efficiencies in terms of accreditation, auditing and compliance processes.

“The ARA thanks the Queensland Government for its support and looks forward to the transition on 30 June 2017.”
