New road entry at Sydney Airport’s T1 International

A new road entry to improve traffic access has opened at Sydney Airport’s T1 international, as part of the airport’s five-year ground access improvements project.

The road entry will make it easier to access the precinct for traffic approaching from Marsh Street.

The changes, effective immediately, enable motorists to bypass merging traffic on Departures and Arrivals roads and directly enter the precinct via Centre Road to access the express pick-up zone, the P9 open-air and the P7 multi-storey car parks.

The new entry is designed to smooth traffic flows and ease congestion during peak periods by reducing the volume of traffic merging at the existing Airport Drive/Marsh Street confluence.

The joint $500 million investment with the NSW Government will make it easier for motorists, public transport users, cyclists and pedestrians to travel to and from the airport.

New road signage will direct motorists and guide them into the correct lanes for Departures, Arrivals, pick-up zones and car parks.

The new entry road follows the successful opening of three new lanes for traffic entering the T2/T3 Domestic precinct in December 2016, widening Sir Reginald Ansett Drive from two lanes to five.

Further improvements will be implemented in 2017, with construction already underway on:

  • An elevated, shared pedestrian/cycle path at T1, linking the Alexandra Canal pedestrian/cycle path seamlessly with the P7 car park. The path provides safer access to T1 for pedestrians and cyclists, including the many airport workers who ride or walk to work
  • A new, dedicated exit road from T1 Departures Road and Arrivals Court onto Airport Drive
