An engineering firm has won the contract for an upgrade of Toongabbie Station in Sydney, which aims to improve accessibility.

Downer EDI Works will complete the upgrade as part of the New South Wales Government’s Transport Access Program.

Member for Seven Hills Mark Taylor said the transport access program is an initiative that is encouraging more people to use public transport by delivering modern, safe and accessible infrastructure across the state.

“As part of this major upgrade customers will benefit from new lifts, making it easier for people with a disability, the elderly, parents with prams and travellers with luggage to access the platforms,” Mr Taylor said.

“There will be new accessible toilets, canopies for weather protection and security will be boosted with additional lighting and new CCTV cameras.

“Two new ‘kiss and ride’ facilities will be created on Portico Parade and Wentworth Avenue, with the bus shelters on Portico Parade also set for a refresh. In addition, new bicycle storage will be installed for those customers who want to ride to the station before jumping on public transport.

“We will start work immediately on detailed designs which will be guided by the feedback received from the community earlier this year, with construction to commence as soon as possible.”

The major upgrade of Toongabbie Station is one of several Transport Access Program projects currently happening across Western Sydney.

Construction is underway at Pendle Hill and Wentworthville stations with an upgrade for Harris Park station due to begin next year. There are also plans for additional commuter parking at Pendle Hill.
