Queensland Rail (QR) has delivered major maintenance upgrades across the North Coast line in Far North, North, and Central Queensland, improving the longevity and reliability of the crucial passenger and freight corridor.

The essential work was completed safely during a scheduled track closure, demonstrating QR’s commitment to safeguarding the line that supports about 8000 train movements each year.

The 1435-kilometre artery, which stretches from Brisbane to Cairns, is essential for moving containerised freight, livestock, and sugar, in addition to supporting long-distance passenger services such as the Spirit of Queensland and the Tilt Trains.

“If you’ve ever wondered why our railway network needs to close from time to time, essential maintenance like what’s happened here is why,” said Scott Cornish, QR Head of Regional.

“This investment is about supporting regional Queensland by safeguarding and improving the reliability of our railway line for freight and passengers and ensuring this vital corridor remains safe and efficient for decades to come.”

Delivering the extensive maintenance required meticulous planning and collaboration. Over the five-day closure, QR mobilised 25 different teams from across Queensland to work simultaneously at 18 worksites located between St Lawrence and Cairns.

The comprehensive scope of works included:

  • Sleeper replacement: 1740 sleepers were replaced between Townsville and Cairns.
  • Track renewals: 3.5 kilometres of track were renewed north of Cardwell.
  • Bridge repairs: Timber bridge repairs were conducted between Ingham and Cairns at Clarkson Creek, Codfish Creek, and Coroboree Creek.
  • Maintenance: Turnout and formation repairs, along with level crossing maintenance, were completed south of Home Hill at Fredrick Field Road and Daniel Road.

The successful completion of the project ensures the North Coast line continues to support Queensland’s economy and transport needs into the future.
