The NSW Nationals have announced an agreement to partner with Snowy Hydro Limited to upgrade the state’s vital road network.
The upgrades will cater for increased heavy vehicle movements as a result of the construction of Snowy 2.0.
Deputy Premier and Member for Monaro, John Barilaro, said Cooma will play a major role in the construction of the Snowy Hydro 2.0 project, with about 130,000 concrete tunnel components to be produced locally.
Mr Barilaro said a new roundabout at the intersection of the Monaro Highway and Polo Flat Road north of Cooma will improve safety for all road users and allow trucks to safely transport the segments from the manufacturing factory in Cooma to various Snowy 2.0 sites.
“Snowy Hydro 2.0 will directly and indirectly support 5000 jobs, providing immediate economic stimulus and long term future benefits for Cooma and the surrounding area,” Mr Barilaro said.
“I know many local residents have been asking for this roundabout for some time and I’m pleased the NSW Government and Snowy Hydro Limited have worked together to make this happen for the community.”
Mr Barilaro said work was already underway to improve the Snowy Mountains Highway routes between Cooma and Snowy 2.0 sites, with further work being undertaken before peak periods of construction.
Snowy Hydro Limited CEO, Paul Broad, said it was great to contribute to an important intersection upgrade that would make local roads safer for the community.
“Snowy 2.0 is a major project for the Snowy Mountains region and the new roundabout will be a wonderful legacy,” Mr Broad said.
“Safety is our number one priority and road safety is something we must all take seriously.
“Snowy Hydro is a big supporter of the local community and it’s great to partner with the NSW Government and Snowy Monaro Regional Council on this road project that will benefit so many people.”
