The top engineers and engineering projects from Sydney have been honoured at the 2023 Engineers Australia Excellence Awards – People & Projects Sydney, recognising the engineering successes throughout New South Wales, such as the Sydney Central Station.

The Engineers Australia Excellence Awards seeks to recognise and reward outstanding achievement in engineering, with local winners going on to represent their division at the national awards in Melbourne on November 29.

The Sydney Project of the Year award went to the Central Station Metro Works and is considered a landmark transportation hub which was redeveloped and recreated.

The project was able to achieve a sustainability and 6-star design rating, resulting in enhanced economic and social outcomes.

The Sydney Division Professional Engineer of the Year award was received by Paul Rogers, an entrepreneur who contributed to the industry’s growth and driven successes on some of the state’s key projects, including metro and light rails.

Anirban Ghose received the Sydney Division Emerging Professional Engineer of the Year for this advanced manufacturing work throughout regional parts of New South Wales and produced research and practical experience of recycling material opportunities and development of technologies.

Professor Veena Sahajwalla was the recipient of the Chemical College Chemical Engineer Achievement Award. She previously earned another title of New South Wales Australian of the Year for her research in high temperature conversation of waste, as well as creating ‘Green Steel’.

Engineers Australia General Manager, Jamie Burrage, said that the awards go beyond just recognising engineering accomplishments.

“They bring attention to the everyday contributions of engineers in our lives,” Mr Burrage said.

“Those celebrated exhibit outstanding leadership and show a commitment to the community and the environment. These accolades give them a platform to spotlight their successes and to emphasise the value of engineering, providing direction and inspiration for the next generation of engineers.”
