The Northern Territory Buy Local Policy is proving successful in supporting local businesses, with many local construction contracts awarded, and 22 further construction tenders out to market. In January 2020, 33 construction contracts valued at $17.8 million were awarded, with the work directly supporting 65 local jobs and hundreds more indirectly.

So far in the 2019/2020 financial year, more than 99 per cent of the 276 tendered projects valued at $315 million have been awarded to Territory local businesses.

22 further construction tenders are currently out to market, and are worth more than $17 million.

These new infrastructure projects include:

  • Works to improve Kinjurra Road in Tennant Creek
  • Upgrades to Yulara School in the Alice Springs region
  • Improvement works on Gimbat Road in the Darwin region
  • Maintenance and installation of services in the East Arnhem Region
  • Remote housing projects across the Territory

In 2019, the NT Government completed more than 40 key infrastructure projects, which supported more than 3,000 local jobs in the construction sector.

The government has also brought the $50 million Mandorah Jetty project forward, to commence in 2020.

NT Chief Minister, Michael Gunner, is confident that the projects will prove invaluable to the local community.

“We’re investing in infrastructure for the Territory because it’s good for local businesses and it’s good for local jobs.

“Our Buy Local rules put local jobs and local businesses first, and our 10-year infrastructure plan will grow the economy and create more jobs for the future,” Mr Gunner said.
