Rail and road works in Pakenham are progressing well, with two new stations open, three level crossings removed and work continuing on the elevated rail line.
New stations are now open at Pakenham and East Pakenham, and level crossings have been removed from Main Street, McGregor Road and Racecourse Road.
Main Street has reopened to traffic with a new roundabout in place. The construction team removed old railway infrastructure, including train tracks, from the road. The team will return to complete finishing works on Main Street in the following weeks.
Crews will now turn their attention to McGregor Road, to remove the old rail tracks, build a new signalised pedestrian crossing and resurface and line mark the road. To complete these works, McGregor Road will be closed at the rail bridge until 16 August.
The Pakenham team said that it would like to thank everyone for their patience during these works.
In the meantime, the team continues to create six MCGs worth of new community open space for locals to enjoy for generations to come. Thousands of new trees, shrubs and grasses will be planted in the new Pakenham Station and open space area.
The new open space will also feature a barbecue area, a half basketball court, playgrounds, bicycle hoops, a bicycle repair station, parklands, seating and garden beds. A Changing Places facility will also be built, for people who cannot use standard accessible toilets.
The open space is expected to be ready for the public to enjoy in spring 2024.
