A new pedestrian refuge is set to be installed on the Illawarra Highway at Albion Park to improve safety for pedestrians and motorists.
Transport for NSW will deliver the project about 190 metres west of Hamilton Road, creating a central refuge to allow pedestrians to cross the highway more safely.
Works will include new kerb and concrete in the centre of the road, along with upgraded street lighting, new line marking and additional signage.
Transport for NSW Executive Director Partnerships and Integration South, Cassandra Ffrench, said the project targeted a high pedestrian-use area.
“This is a 50 kilometre per hour section of road that is frequented by pedestrians accessing nearby businesses, the bowling club and residential areas,” Ffrench said.
“By installing a formal crossing and refuge, we are giving pedestrians more time to cross the road and protection at the refuge point in the middle.”
Some parking changes will be required on the highway to facilitate construction.
Works are scheduled to start on Tuesday 27 January and continue for about two weeks, Monday to Friday, weather permitting. Most works will be carried out during the day between 9.30am and 2.30pm, with occasional night works between 7pm and 6am.
During construction, single lane closures and a reduced speed limit of 40 kilometres per hour will be in place.
The bus stop on Tongarra Road before Amaral Avenue will be temporarily relocated about 50 metres west until works are complete.
Motorists are advised to allow up to ten minutes of additional travel time and follow the directions of traffic control.
The $485,000 project is jointly funded by the Federal and NSW governments under the Road Safety Program.
