Perth intersection upgrade set to begin

A $7.4 million upgrade to two of Perth’s busiest  intersections is set to  begin in November 2016, improving safety and reducing congestion in Perth’s northern suburbs.

The Marmion Avenue intersections at Hepburn and Whitfords Avenues are two of the busiest intersections in the northern suburbs and are notorious crash hot spots.

Western Australian Minister for Transport, Bill Marmion, said, “The works will widen the intersections to provide additional and extended turning pockets to improve traffic flow and safety by reducing delays and driver frustration at peak periods.

“This project will also generate 50 jobs over the duration of the contract.”

Both intersections were among the state’s crash hot spots. In the five years leading up to December 2014, there were 249 crashes on Marmion Avenue at the intersections of Whitfords and Hepburn avenues.

“Our key concern is the safety of all road users and reducing traffic congestion, so in addition to the works, the upgraded intersections will include CCTV to improve traffic and incident management through real-time intervention,” Mr Marmion said.

“The system will allow Main Roads Western Australia to monitor the intersections and make immediate adjustments to the traffic signals to improve vehicle flow during the busiest times or following an incident.

“We want to make the lives of West Australians easier and safer, and for road users that means maintaining traffic flow, reducing journey times and ensuring our intersections are designed to minimise vehicle incidents.”

Pedestrian and cycling facilities will also be upgraded at both locations.
