The Northern Territory will soon see an influx in jobs and new infrastructure thanks to a multi-million dollar CBD major infrastructure program, with plans to revitalise Darwin.
More than $6 million in capital grants delivered to the City of Darwin will fund three job-creating projects to help enhance Darwin’s burgeoning development as a vibrant, tropical city.
Northern Territory Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics, Eva Lawler, said that the government is delivering on its plan to improve the lives of all Territorians by creating jobs and investing in the city’s infrastructure.
“Jobs are the Territory Labor Government’s number one priority and these small but important projects will add to more than 300 direct construction jobs our major CBD infrastructure program has supported in the Darwin CBD and indirectly support many, many more,” Ms Lawler said.
The smaller projects will add to three major projects currently underway in the CBD – the State Square underground car park, the Barneson Boulevard entry link and the Cavenagh Street shade structure – which, combined, have supported more than 300 local jobs.
The three projects delivered by the $6 million in capital grants funding include:
- Smith Street Greening and Shading, Stage 1 ($3 million). Revitalisation of the streetscape, by enhancing the urban landscape and creating a cooler environment
- Laneway Activation ($2 million). Laneways and small streets, including Austin Lane, will be upgraded to bring vibrancy and improved connectivity between streets
- Bennett and Smith Street Shading ($1 million). Installation of shading to improve amenity and cooling near the Tourist Information Centre
“These projects, along with other City Deal initiatives, will ensure Darwin is a thriving, vibrant, cool capital city, a destination to visit and a place to call home,” Ms Lawler said.
Work on the trio of projects is expected to commence in late 2018.
