Construction has commenced on a new container depot at the Port of Mackay, supporting jobs and strengthening freight and trade capacity in Central Queensland.
The 1.3-hectare facility is being delivered by North Queensland Bulk Ports (NQBP) and will enable regular containerised imports and exports to operate directly through Mackay for the first time.
The development is expected to generate employment during construction and ongoing operations, while providing local businesses and producers with more efficient access to domestic and international markets.
By allowing freight to move directly through Mackay, exporters and importers will no longer need to rely on distant ports such as Brisbane. The change is expected to reduce logistics costs, improve turnaround times and enhance regional competitiveness.
Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Brent Mickelberg, said the project represented a practical investment in regional infrastructure.
“This is backing regional Queensland with real infrastructure that strengthens the economy and supports local jobs,” Mickelberg said.
“This is a funded, construction-ready project that is now underway.”
Mickelberg said the development would also contribute to improved freight efficiency and road safety outcomes.
“This project will improve road safety, reduce pressure on major highways and help build a stronger economy in North Queensland.”
The container depot forms part of broader efforts to expand port capacity and improve supply chain resilience across Central Queensland.
