Ports North will carry out approximately $570,000 worth of port infrastructure works at Thursday Island and Horn Island in Far North Queensland, including major wharf pylon and fittings replacements, and upgrades to the passenger pontoon.
The works, to be carried out from the end of June 2017, are expected to take about three weeks.
Operations Compliance Manager, Richard Stevenson, said, “This is part of our rolling maintenance program and ensures commercial users and the public enjoy a high standard of facilities at our ports.
“In particular, the passenger pontoon at Horn Island, which connects commuters with the airport between the islands, will be replaced.”
Mr Stevenson said there would be some disruptions for commercial users at the harbour, but that was inevitable when undertaking maintenance work.
“However, we are working with all operators to ensure they stay informed and can conduct their business as efficiently as possible,” Mr Stevenson said.
Ports North, a Queensland Government-owned corporation, owns and operates the ports of Cairns, Mourilyan, Cape Flattery, Skardon River, Karumba, Quintell Beach, Thursday Island, Cooktown and Burketown.
“Our ports are a vital connection for communities in Far North Queensland facilitating trade, exports, local business, government, transport and tourism,” Mr Stevenson said.
“We look forward to completing these new upgrades for the people of Thursday Island and Horn Island as safely and as quickly as possible.”
