Works have commenced to improve the Port of Bundaberg’s roadways, with pavement and drainage reconstruction beginning on Wharf Drive.

Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) CEO, Craig Haymes, said the works are in line with GPC’s Life Saving Commitment of ‘Roads & Maritime Safety’, with the works set to improve access for port users.

“Local contractor Berajondo will be facilitating the new pavement, services and drainage improvements,” Mr Haymes said.

“The Port of Bundaberg is a busy place, with many tenants, port workers and community members utilising the roadways, so it’s a priority for us to ensure these roadways are safe for all.

“As a vital link in the supply chain, and as an area that has the ability to support future developments, the project aligns with our long term strategic vision.”

Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister, Mark Bailey, said public assets, like the Port of Bundaberg, paid dividends to Queensland.

“Thanks to the Queensland Government, we have our strong port assets in the hands of Queenslanders,” Mr Bailey said.

“And it’s that commitment that sees our ports continue to support local jobs and training opportunities.

“Better access brings with it an open door for future opportunities for the Port and for Bundaberg as a whole.”

Member for Bundaberg, Tom Smith, said the works have created around 20 local jobs.

“Delivering improved infrastructure that will support our export operations is a big boost for Bundaberg and for Queensland as a whole,” Mr Smith said.

“The project brings with it a pipeline of jobs for the region – boosting our economic recovery from COVID-19.”

Other key upgrade projects completed at the Port of Bundaberg include the $5.3 million upgrade to Buss and Newman Streets and the acquisition and remediation of the seven hectares of decommissioned fuel tank terminal land in late 2021.

Promoting the Port of Bundaberg and surrounding State Development Area has been a key remit for GPC as it prepares for the next 50 years.

GPC remains confident the Port of Bundaberg will continue to go from strength to strength and is committed to exploring new opportunities for the port moving forward.
