Fourteen new apprentices and trainees have commenced training at Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC), supporting workforce development and long-term operational capability in Central Queensland.

As one of the region’s largest employers, GPC has said it is investing in practical, hands-on training to strengthen regional skills and support its day-to-day port operations.

The latest intake highlights the role of government-owned corporations in developing skilled workforces and providing clear pathways into long-term employment.

Apprentices will work alongside experienced tradespeople maintaining electrical systems, heavy machinery, diesel equipment and refrigeration units critical to safe and efficient port operations.

Trainees will gain experience in environmental services and computer-aided drafting, supporting planning, safety compliance and on-site operational activities.

Queensland Minister for Finance, Trade, Employment and Training, Ros Bates, said the program focused on practical training linked to regional employment opportunities.

“These apprentices and trainees are learning on the job, working with real equipment and real systems that matter to Central Queensland,” Bates said.

“Employers training locally are helping to create genuine career pathways and strengthen Queensland’s skills pipeline.”

Member for Callide, Bryson Head, said the intake demonstrated the benefits of aligning training with local industry needs.

“These are hands-on roles that support major operations right here in our region,” Head said.

“It means local people can build skilled careers in Central Queensland and contribute to key industries.”

GPC Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Johnson, said the intake reflected the organisation’s long-term workforce strategy.

“They’ll be learning alongside highly skilled employees with decades of experience, ensuring trade skills and operational knowledge are passed on to the next generation,” Johnson said.

The program forms part of GPC’s broader commitment to workforce development and regional capacity building.
