A regional port has won the Environmental Award at the 2021 Daily Cargo News Australian Shipping & Maritime Industry Awards.
GeelongPort won the award.
The Environmental Award recognises initiatives, operating systems or company policies that have led to sustainable outcomes which have reduced marine pollution and contributed to the protection of the natural environment with regard to the movement of freight.
GeelongPort Chief Executive Officer, Brett Winter, said he was honoured to have won the Environmental Award category, which recognises the environmental protection efforts of the business.
“Since the launch of our inaugural Environment Strategy in 2019, we set out with the vision of becoming Australia’s most environmentally sustainable bulk port with a focus on minimising our resource use, eliminating waste and emissions, nurturing our port land and supporting an appealing and healthy Corio Bay,” Mr Winter said.
“Since then, our team has worked tirelessly to deliver a number of significant outcomes that are resulting in improvements to our business, our community and most importantly, our environment.
“I am incredibly proud of the amazing work of the GeelongPort Team and, in particular, our Environment and Sustainability team led by Dr Lisa Mills.”
This award recognises the significant achievements GeelongPort has delivered over the past year, some of which includes:
- Becoming the first port in Australia to achieve Climate Active carbon neutral certification for its business operations
- Being recognised globally for its ongoing commitment to ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) transparency and improved performance, receiving an impressive five-star rating in the 2021 GRESB Infrastructure Assessment
- Making a Science Based Target commitment to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions and having seen a 15% reduction in its first year
- Partnering with Barwon Water and Barwon Health to ensure GeelongPort has a cleaner energy future, transitioning toward 100 per cent renewable electricity and zero net emissions through a Power Purchase Agreement
Mr Winter has said that GeelongPort is looking forward to continuing to invest in major initiatives that deliver better outcomes for their local environment.
