The New South Wales Government has announced a new development in the Sydney Metro City & Southwest Project.
Following the recent completion of all track laying through the tunnels, high voltage power systems needed to operate Victoria Cross Station have now been installed, tested and commissioned. This is the first of seven underground stations to have its power turned on.
Almost 7km of high voltage power cables were laid in the station. A further 80km of low-voltage electricity cables and eight kilometres of communications cables are being laid within the station precinct.
This comes as the final high voltage cables required to power metro services between Chatswood and Sydenham were installed.
More than 95km of high voltage copper cables have been installed to provide power to all stations.
Once these cables are turned on, they will supply power to all electrical equipment in the station buildings, cross passages and trackside equipment, as well as powering the trains.
The power to the rest of the stations will be turned on in the coming months, ready for testing and commissioning of new trains in 2023 and services commencing through the city in 2024.
