The Victorian Government will fast-track four Precinct Structure Plans (PSPs) in Geelong’s north and west, unlocking more than 23,000 homes and supporting future infrastructure delivery for the region’s growing population.
The Batesford North, McCanns Lane/Merrawarp Road, Batesford South and Heales Road East precincts are expected to accommodate more than 66,000 residents as Greater Geelong continues to expand.
Alongside the planning work, the Government will prepare Development Contributions Plans to help fund essential infrastructure, including roads, transport connections, parks, open space and community facilities for the new communities.
Greater Geelong is forecast to require an additional 128,600 homes by 2051, with the precincts intended to accelerate housing delivery while ensuring supporting infrastructure is planned alongside residential development.
The Government also announced the construction of two three-bedroom social housing dwellings in Geelong using 3D printing technology, reducing build times to around three months per home. The project is the first use of 3D printed construction for social housing in Victoria.
Victorian Minister for Planning, Sonya Kilkenny, said the Government was acting to accelerate housing delivery.
“We’ve been clear that if councils aren’t delivering, we’re prepared to step in and unlock the homes Victorians need,” Kilkenny said.
Victorian Minister for Housing and Building, Nick Staikos, said new construction technologies would also play an important role in increasing housing supply.
“We need to pull every lever to build more homes, and that means embracing new technology like 3D printed housing,” Staikos said.
