One of Australia’s biggest infrastructure initiatives, the Tonkin Project, is nearing completion, with predictions it will be open by late 2023.

The $400 million project has been created in partnership with Main Roads Western Australia, Public Transport Authority, Georgiou, BMD, WA Limestone, GHD, and BG&E.

The objective is to alleviate the bottleneck on Great Eastern Highway in Western Australia by improving safety and decreasing travel time.

In addition, the project will involve rail-enabling works for the METRONET Morley-Ellenbrook line that will run along the highway.

Smooth completion of the construction will deliver a massive impact, with the hopes that it will minimise traffic congestion for the 100,000 motorists that use the Tonkin Highway daily.

The road safety requirements on such a large-scale project are an immense undertaking.

RSEA Safety Hire ensures optimal performance

Australia’s RSEA Safety Hire successfully supplied the safety equipment for the project and installed the equipment per Road Safety guidelines to guarantee optimal performance.

RSEA Safety Hire has the largest supply of Zoneguard™ steel barriers in the country. These steel barriers play a significant role in any project’s safety adherence, meaning proper installation is essential.

The experienced team at RSEA Safety Hire provided the project with 24km of temporary Zoneguard™ steel barriers to protect construction workers and road users. While weekly targets continue to be successfully met by the RSEA Safety Hire team under complicated, time-sensitive conditions.

RSEA Safety Hire erected hundreds of metres of MASH-approved water-filled and concrete barriers to provide a safe zone for the project’s staff and contractors. The company also delivered Visual Message (VMs) boards to alert road users and keep them updated on the latest speed limits and traffic conditions.

RSEA’s safety hire experts have extensive experience installing Zoneguard™ barriers on major construction projects. Not only have they been an integral part of the Tonkin Gap project, but they’ve also provided safety services for the Tullamarine Freeway, Newcastle M1 upgrade and Port Botany, among many others.

Why did the Tonkin Gap Project decide on Zoneguard™ barriers?

The answer is simple – these steel barriers deliver cost-effective solutions.

Each barrier weighs 1200kg which makes it significantly cheaper to transport compared to other barriers, especially concrete, and their 12m length makes installation easier and shorter, reducing project costs.

On projects where work zones are limited or low-deflection is essential, Zoneguard™ performs better than concrete and plastic. Additionally, Zoneguard™ is the perfect barrier for installations near ditches or excavations because it makes every centimetre count.

Crafted from steel, which is naturally flexible, Zoneguard™ can absorb the impact of vehicles that accidentally hit the barriers and safely redirect the energy. This helps to minimise the risk of secondary crashes and increases the safety of drivers.

With a MASH TL- 3 rating, Zoneguard™ barriers are approved for all Australian states and territories and can be used on roads with speed limits of up to 100km/h. Due to their low centre of gravity and stiff cross-section, Zoneguard™ barriers deliver industry-leading crash test performance.
