Reef protection key focus in Port of Townsville masterplan

The Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has released a masterplan for the Port of Townsville which outlines the sustainable development of port operations while protecting the Great Barrier Reef.

Sustainable planning includes the delivery of optimised port operations, economic growth and preservation of the environment.

The Port of Townsville is one of four priority ports recognised as fundamental to the economic future growth of the region.

Undertaking port master planning for priority ports is a Queensland Government port‐related action of the Reef 2050 Long‐Term Sustainability Plan.

The final masterplan  for the Port of Townsville has been prepared by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) in collaboration with Townsville Port, Townsville City Council, state agencies and other key stakeholders, including environmental and community groups.

Port of Townsville Chief Executive Officer, Ranee Crosby, said that finalisation of the masterplan is the result of long-term planning, consultation and environmental stewardship at Townsville Port.

“We are acutely aware of our location, in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, and undertake a comprehensive range of environmental programs to ensure we continue to protect the environmental values of Cleveland Bay and surrounding areas.”

“As the trade gateway for the North West Minerals Province, and the largest general cargo and container port in northern Australia, the masterplan articulates our commitment to responsible stewardship of Port lands and waters.”

Master planning aligns with other key port-related projects associated with the ongoing sustainable development of the port including the Port Expansion Project – Channel Upgrade Project, Townsville Eastern Access Rail Corridor and the Townsville City Deal.

The masterplan will be implemented by a port overlay – a regulatory document which implements the masterplan that is given effect through existing development assessment and strategic planning processes undertaken by the Port, Townsville City Council and the Queensland Government.
