A $3.7 million upgrade of the Cloncurry airport terminal in regional Queensland is now complete and will help cater for larger numbers of people using the airport and enhance passenger comfort and security.

The project is jointly funded by the Queensland Government and Cloncurry Shire Council, with $500,000 coming from the government’s regional infrastructure funding program.

Queensland Minister for State Development and Minister for Natural Resources and Mines, Dr Anthony Lynham, said the project catered for a larger volume of passengers to pass through on their way to homes, businesses and jobs in nearby mines.

“The upgrade allows for security screening of passengers plus cafes and car hire,” Dr Lynham said.

“This project is important not just for meeting current passenger needs but also catering for future growth.”

The Queensland Government also provided $800,000 to support the recently completed $3.3 million upgrade to the taxiway and apron.

“The upgrades have seen Virgin Australia introduce twice-weekly direct flights from Brisbane to Cloncurry, and with it the potential to boost tourism in the region,” Dr Lynham said

“Investing in critical regional infrastructure projects like the Cloncurry airport demonstrates the Palaszczuk government’s commitment to strengthening regional communities.”

Dr Lynham said collaboration was a key to the success of these projects and he was pleased to provide support to the Cloncurry Shire Council—and to their $3.2 million outlay for the upgraded terminal and $2.5 million for the apron and taxiway.
