Airstrips in three remote NSW communities will receive a major infrastructure boost, with the state government committing $15 million to critical runway upgrades to support larger aircraft and improve emergency access.

The funding will support upgrades at Bourke Airport, White Cliffs airstrip, and Deniliquin Airport. The works aim to future-proof these vital transport links for health services, emergency response, and regional development.

The airstrip upgrades will include runway extensions and widening, surface strengthening, and potentially new lighting and line markings to enable safer take-off and landing for larger aircraft.

Minister for Regional NSW and Western NSW Tara Moriarty said the improvements would strengthen regional connectivity and ensure communities are better supported during natural disasters.

“Our rural and remote airstrips are a lifeline,” Moriarty said.

“This investment will deliver real improvements where they’re most needed—boosting resilience, services and opportunity in regional towns.”

Under the plan, Bourke Airport will receive $4.66 million to strengthen its runway, White Cliffs airstrip will see $5.76 million in upgrades, and Deniliquin Airport will benefit from $4.57 million in enhancement works.

The funding forms part of the NSW Government’s $400 million Regional Development Trust Fund, which targets improved service delivery and stronger regional connections.

The projects are based on a statewide audit of rural airstrips, including consultation with aeromedical services and asset owners to determine top priorities.

Work is expected to begin later in 2025, with councils in Bourke, Central Darling and Edward River Shires overseeing delivery.
