Construction is set to begin on the first stage of the New Richmond Bridge project, following the award of a major contract for related works.
Transport for NSW says the first part of the project, including the creation of new roundabouts, will start in mid-2025 with completion expected by late 2026.
The works form part of a $515 million joint commitment from the Federal and NSW Governments to improve road safety, flood resilience, and traffic flow between Richmond and North Richmond.
The new roundabouts – located at the intersections of The Driftway with Londonderry Road and Blacktown Road – are designed to support better access to the planned bridge over the Hawkesbury River and serve as key links in the local evacuation network.
The Londonderry Road upgrade includes a southbound lane to assist with emergency traffic during flood events. At Blacktown Road, the roundabout will be accompanied by a new bridge over Rickabys Creek, built to withstand a 1-in-20-year flood.
“The Minns Labor Government is building better communities across North Western Sydney, bringing these important projects, jointly funded with the Federal Albanese Government, into construction phase,” said NSW Minister for Roads Jenny Aitchison.
“These first stages of the Richmond Bridge project on The Driftway will improve flood resilience and evacuation routes,” she said.
Federal Member for Macquarie, Susan Templeman, welcomed the announcement.
“It’s great to see this much awaited project getting under way. Getting to this stage has been a journey where Government has worked closely with the community to ensure best outcomes,” she said.
The New Richmond Bridge project received environmental approval in 2022. Stage 1 early works, completed in 2024, included relocating water mains and drainage utilities.
While construction on Stage 1 progresses, Transport for NSW is finalising community feedback on Stage 2, which includes the new bridge. A Submissions Report is expected later this year.
