The Queensland Government has begun planning key upgrades to Toowoomba-Athol Road, focusing on safety and capacity improvements at Wyreema Road and Boundary Street South.
The work forms part of the State Government’s election commitment to deliver safer, more efficient travel along this crucial corridor.
Toowoomba-Athol Road, locally known as Anzac Avenue, is a vital freight and commuter link connecting Toowoomba with surrounding towns, carrying a mix of urban and rural traffic as Westbrook and Wyreema grow rapidly. The planning phase will incorporate community feedback to shape practical, long-term solutions that reflect local knowledge.
Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Brent Mickelberg, said the government was committed to listening to residents and acting on the community’s needs.
“We made a commitment to improve Toowoomba-Athol Road, and we are getting on with delivering it,” Mickelberg said.
“Upgrading this crucial corridor is about safer, more efficient journeys for families, freight operators and rural communities, while supporting a stronger regional economy.”
Member for Condamine, Pat Weir, said the additional planning responded to strong community engagement.
“Our community has been very clear about the need to address congestion and improve safety at these intersections,” Weir said.
“This next stage of planning is about future-proofing Toowoomba-Athol Road so it can safely support growing communities and keep our region moving.”
Construction on the current safety upgrade is expected to be completed by the end of the year, with the next phase of planning ensuring the corridor continues to meet the needs of the community.
