Safety upgrades are set to begin on two bridges over the Great Western Highway in the Blue Mountains, with new screens to be installed to improve protection for pedestrians and motorists.
The works will see safety screens fitted to the Private Ronald Field Bridge at Hazelbrook and the AW Bewley Bridge at Warrimoo, bringing both structures in line with current safety standards.
Transport for NSW Executive Director Partnerships and Integration West, Damien Pfeiffer, said the upgrades are designed to reduce the risk of incidents involving people or objects falling from bridges.
“While incidents are rare, there is potential for serious injury, and these upgrades will help minimise those risks,” Pfeiffer said.
“The safety screens act as a deterrent and will improve safety for people both on the bridges and on the highway below.”
Work on the Private Ronald Field Bridge is scheduled to begin on 28 April and is expected to take around three weeks, weather permitting. Construction will take place at night on weekdays between 8pm and 5am.
Traffic changes will be in place during work hours, including single lane closures, a reduced speed limit of 40km/h, and temporary footpath closures with detours for pedestrians and cyclists.
Work on the AW Bewley Bridge is planned for mid-June to early July, with crews operating along sections of the Great Western Highway near Warrimoo.
Motorists are advised to follow traffic directions, allow extra travel time, and drive to conditions while works are underway.
