Rail is just one of the many ways in which we can drive a more sustainable future for the globe. Greater use of public transport supports more sustainable cities and communities, with one commuter train taking 578 cars off the road and delivering an environmental benefit equivalent to planting 1800 trees per year. Moving more freight on rail can also deliver substantial sustainability benefits, with rail freight producing 16 times less carbon pollution than road freight.

The sustainability stream at AusRAIL 2022 will discuss some of the key innovations, technology and new approaches that will drive more sustainable outcomes in the rail industry to support our net-zero future.

Ricardo Rail Business Development Manager NSW/ACT Jorge Martin Gistau will explore the lessons from the safety assessment and certification of the UK’s first hydrogen train. Find out what the outcomes of the UK experience could mean for Australia, and the key considerations for operators exploring hydrogen trains as an alternative to diesel.

WSP Regional Executive Tom Cook will also talk about the move to renewable energies as he discusses using solar power in the rail industry. Find out how solar could be an option for providing a greener alternative to powering our rail networks as part of our net-zero future.

Victoria’s Level Crossing Removal Project has delivered a range of sustainable solutions in recent years. AusRAIL will feature a keynote presentation by North Western program Alliance Sustainability Manager Fiona Bowie, where she will share her experience working on the project, and discuss how innovation and continuous improvement can drive a more future focused industry.

The opportunity to explore nature based solutions along rail corridors is a growing area of focus for the rail industry globally, with the industry’s linear infrastructure presenting unique opportunities to support improved biodiversity outcomes. AusRAIL will hear from ARTC Inland Rail Program Environment Senior Advisor Vanessa Gorecki on delivering ecological enhancement for linear infrastructure. With the ARTC Inland Rail project maintaining a strong focus on ecological considerations, hear from the expert herself as to how projects can deliver positive outcomes along the rail corridor.
