Sustainable plant is not a silver bullet for the construction industry’s challenges, but it is becoming a practical and increasingly important part of how projects are delivered.
As Business Unit Leader at Select Plant Australia, Ruairi Mawn is watching the Australian infrastructure sector navigate the shift toward a lower-carbon future.
He says that for years, the conversation around electric and hybrid machinery was stalled by a lack of trust. The industry was plagued by doubts around whether sustainable equipment could withstand the rigours required to support the Australian construction environment.
That position is now evolving.
“What’s changed is the level of confidence,” Mawn says.
“We’re not debating whether the technology works anymore. The focus is on where it delivers the most value and how to integrate it properly into projects.”
This is being driven by more than just corporate stewardship; it is now based on proven performance, a response to rising fuel volatility as evidenced by global tensions in the Middle East, and the need to meet increasingly stringent sustainability targets.
Mawn believes there is also a growing recognition that plant and equipment are critical levers in achieving better project outcomes, both for the contractor, client and the community in general.
“Lower noise and carbon emissions, smoother operation and higher comfort levels for operators are things that show up from day one,” he says. “It has been rewarding to visit sites and speak to the teams that benefit from these assets, and the feedback has been consistently positive.”
The shift to green assets is also transforming how projects are planned and delivered.
Unlike diesel equipment, which can often be deployed with minimal integration, electric and hybrid plant requires a more deliberate approach.

“It forces a different level of thinking,” Mawn says. “You need to be more considered about how equipment is used, when it’s used, and how power is managed across the site.”
Select’s growing fleet reflects that shift. Its offering now includes a mix of electric and hybrid excavators, cranes, material handling, vehicles and ancillary equipment, backed by battery storage and site power solutions designed to maintain productivity across a full shift.
In many applications, performance and distance from power sources is no longer a barrier even for some of the larger equipment.
Mawn says the operational reality of these machines is often a surprise to those accustomed to the roar of a diesel engine. From a maintenance perspective, the shift also introduces changes.
“In terms of longevity and service, electric power systems reduce mechanical complexity, which can lower wear and maintenance requirements.
“Service models do change, but with the right partnerships and training, reliability remains high,” he says.

Mawn says what differentiates the company’s approach is a focus on practicality over novelty. The selection of assets is based on rigorous assessments to ensure that every electric or hybrid machine delivers reliability and productivity that is equal to, or better, than diesel.

Ultimately, the pace of adoption will come down to leadership across the sector.
“There’s pressure on every project to do more with less impact,” Mawn says. “But the industry tends to default to what it knows. Change only happens when people are prepared to lead it.”
