The shortlist for the 2019 Smart Cities Awards has been announced, recognising achievement in the development, technological advancement and interconnection of Australian cities.
The awards, a part of the Smart Cities 2019 Conference, highlight the brightest ideas and talent within the development and enhancement of Australian cities, and showcase the exciting work currently being undertaken across the sector.
The six award categories are Smart City of the Year – Metropolitan, Smart City of the year – Regional, Best Integration of an Individual Technology, Smart Innovator of the Year, Young Smart Innovator of the Year, and Best Residential Innovation.
The shortlisted nominees are:
Smart City of the Year – Metropolitan
Will be awarded to a metropolitan city (over 100,000 residents) showcasing the best use and implementation of technologies and processes to enhance the overall operability and living experience within their city.

- City of Newcastle
- Moreland City Council
- Lake Macquarie City Council
- Randwick City Council
- City of Prospect
- Townsville City Council
Smart City of the Year – Regional
Will be awarded to a regional city (under 100,000 residents) showcasing the best use and implementation of technologies and processes to enhance the overall operability and living experience within their city.
Finalists:
- Southern Grampians Shire Council
- Broken Hill City Council
- Latrobe City Council
- City of Darwin
Best Integration of an Individual Technology
Will be awarded in recognition of the best new, stand-alone technology integrated within a metropolitan or regional city.
Finalists:
- Woollahra Municipal Council – 3D modelling platform
- City of Wanneroo – RailSmart Planning Support System
- RACV – Smartphone application integrating Melbourne’s public and private transportation options
- Brimbank – Suite of smart bin sensors, barbeque failure sensors, park utilisation mobotix cameras, air quality and weather stations, and facility use counters at Buckingham ReserveSydney Metro – Driverless (advanced signalling) train technology
- SAGE Group – Matilda the smart transit hub
Best Residential Innovation
Will be awarded in recognition of the best technological innovation focused on improving residential outcomes within cities.
Finalists:
- Solar Analytics – Solar monitoring software
- City of Canterbury Bankstown – Closing the Loop on Waste Project
- SMEC – Atherstone Estate
- City of Gosnells – Cool Roofs Project
Smart Innovator of the Year
Will be awarded to an individual making the biggest contribution to the technological development within their business or government organisation.
Finalists:
- Peter Auhl, Chief Information Officer, Central Coast Council
- David Klingberg, Director and Principal, Smart City Strategies and Solutions
- Jagpreet Walia, Sustainability Lead, City Of Melville
Young Smart Innovator of the Year
Will be awarded to a young person (under 35) demonstrating outstanding performance and passion for achieving digital transformation within cities.

- Oliver Lock, PhD Candidate, UNSW
- Rebecca Jacobs, Smart City Lead, Randwick City Council
The Smart Cities Awards will be announced and presented during the Smart Cities 2019 conference, which is running from 30-31 May at the Pullman Hotel, Albert Park in Melbourne.
Smart Cities 2019 will feature industry leaders presenting on all the current trends, technologies and innovations.
Professionals from fields such as infrastructure, utilities, smart transport, urban development and planning, IoT and cloud technology will be in attendance, making the event a perfect opportunity to network and learn more about the industry.
With speakers from Amazon, Infrastructure Australia, the Smart Cities Research Institute, Smart Cities Lab, AustCyber and many more, the event is not to be missed.
