The South Australian Government has allocated $100 million in its upcoming State Budget 2020-21 for road safety projects, which combined with the Federal Budget, brings the total funding up to $268 million for vital maintenance and upgrade works.
Projects as part of the State’s Government’s $100 million allocation include maintenance works on metropolitan roads such as Port Road, Fullarton Road, Marion Road, Greenhill Road and Anzac Highway.
South Australian Premier, Steven Marshall, said creating jobs and backing local business was vital as the state continues to navigate through the global COVID-19 pandemic.
“South Australia is facing its most challenging economic period in living memory and investing in projects that will get people into jobs sooner will keep our economy firing during this extremely difficult time,” Mr Marshall said.
“This is another part of our plan to keep South Australia safe and strong, by creating jobs, backing business and building what matters.”
South Australian Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Corey Wingard, said the State Government was committed to building what matters for South Australians – and some of these projects will start within weeks.
“We have a series of high priority roads we want to start work on as soon as possible to bust congestion and deliver safety benefits for South Australian motorists,” Mr Wingard said.
“The Marshall Government is focused on getting people from A to B faster so they can spend less time sitting in traffic and more time with their families doing what they love.
“Some of these works are expected to commence within weeks and while road works can be a hassle it’s important to remember that it means jobs for South Australians.”
Among the metropolitan roads that will be upgraded include:
- Port Road – Grand Junction Road to East Avenue ($9 million)
- Fullarton Road – Glen Osmond Road to Carrick Hill/Rundle St to The Parade ($6 million)
- Marion Road – Richmond Road to Anzac Highway, Henley Beach Road to Sir Donald Bradman Drive ($5.5 million)
- Anzac Highway – Marion Road to Morphett Road ($3.5 million)
This is in addition to an additional $59.5 million in road safety stimulus funding announced in June, which included:
- $10 million for Audio Tactile Line Marking along key regional road corridors
- $10 million for installation of road-side barrier systems
- $10 million for sealing council roads approaching sealed rural arterial roads
- $8.5 million to improve road lighting along key regional roads and rural intersections
- $6 million for road safety improvements on Long Valley Road, between Mt Barker and Strathalbyn
- $5 million for shoulder sealing works along key regional roads
- $5 million to install new median wire treatments along the Dukes Highway
- $4 million for installation of activated safety signage on the South Eastern Freeway
- $1 million for installation of variable speed limit signs around key safety blackspots Anzac Highway – Marion Road to Morphett Road ($3.5 million)
This funding is proposed to be spent within the next two years.
