The Victorian Government will commit more than $44 million to fix unsafe and deteriorating roads in Victoria’s South West through road resurfacing and upgrades.
Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan joined Member for Western Victoria Gayle Tierney at the Hopkins Highway at Ellerslie to announce the funding, which will see works to rehabilitate sections of road to make them smoother and resistant to further damage.
More than 240km of road will undergo resurfacing works including Foxhow Road, Portland-Casterton Road and Hamilton-Port Fairy Road.
As well as the Bellarine, Princes, Glenelg, Henty and Hamilton highways, many other roads are set for important resurfacing works over 12 months including:
- Cobden-Warrnambool Road 6km
- Casterton-Apsley Road 2km
- Condah-Coleraine Road 6km
- Warrnambool-Caramut Road 1km
In addition, major road reconstructions totalling around 30km are also planned for some of the key arterial roads and the Great Ocean Road, Friend in Hand Road, Darlington Road and Rokewood-Skipton Road.
Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan said, “We have listened to the community to help identify roads and highways that need attention.
“We want to create safer journeys for everyone and this program will ensure the roads that need our attention the most will receive it.”
The works will reduce the level of deterioration of road surfaces and aim to not only create smoother and safer roads for all motorists but to preserve the longevity of the roads.
While interim measures such as asphalt patching works over the winter period will ensure roads can continue to operate safely in the short-term, the works will ensure their ongoing, safe operation into the future.
Victorian Member for Western Victoria Gayle Tierney said, “Over the coming months you’ll notice more crews out on the roads, repairing the pavement and laying new surfaces.
“We’re pleased to be getting on with the job and giving south-west residents the quality roads they deserve.”
