Supporting mental health in the construction industry

Sydney Metro is supporting the MATES in Construction ‘Stronger Together’ campaign, launching the industry-led initiative at its Chatswood site to bring awareness to suicide in the construction sector.

The campaign was launched by NSW Minister for Transport and Roads, Andrew Constance, Sydney Metro Chief Executive, Jon Lamonte, and MATES in Construction Chief Executive Officer, Brad Parker.

The initiative aims to address suicide in the construction sector where a worker takes their life every two days.

Across Australia, 190 construction workers take their lives each year, six times the number killed in workplace accidents.

The program offers workers the tools they need to build strong support networks on construction projects across the country.

Sydney Metro has been supporting the MATES in Construction program since 2016.

This includes a network of MATES in Construction ‘Connectors’ across project sites, who act to keep others safe while connecting them to help.

Sydney Metro said it and its delivery partners are proud to support all efforts to safeguard the health, safety and wellbeing of our workers.

The MATES Stronger Together program is run by MATES in Construction, a partnership between building companies, unions, employer groups, and mental health organisations working to raise the standard of mental health in the industry.
