Work is advancing on Sydney Metro’s Airport Terminal Station, set to feature the widest platforms on the network and luggage-friendly features.
The 10-metre-wide platforms, twice the width of those at Gadigal Station in the CBD, are designed to handle high passenger volumes and streamline airport transfers for the Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport.
The station will include larger lifts and wider ticket gates, with the metro line able to move up to 7,740 passengers per hour in each direction.
The six-stop, 23-kilometre line will link the airport to St Marys in 15 minutes, enabling direct transfers to the T1 Western Line for services to Blacktown, Parramatta, Strathfield and Central.
A 60-tonne crane is lowering precast concrete segments 25 metres underground to form the platforms. Segments are bolted and concreted together on site, with the installation to take 25 days.
Similar works will follow at Airport Business Park and Orchard Hills stations, with Bradfield Station already complete.
The Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport project is part of a broader phase of construction milestones across the metro network.
The Sydenham to Bankstown conversion has reached 80 per cent completion at Bankstown, where platform screen installation is finished. On Sydney Metro West, 90 per cent of tunnelling is complete, with recent tunnel boring breakthroughs at Pyrmont and Parramatta.
The $10.5 billion Western Sydney Airport line is jointly funded by the Australian and NSW governments, each contributing $5.25 billion.
“Having the right transport infrastructure in place for this new airport will connect people with jobs, leisure, and enable businesses to thrive,” said NSW Premier Chris Minns.
Federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King said: “Western Sydney International will be Australia’s most technologically advanced airport, so it’s apt that it will be served by a fast, frequent and high-tech driverless Metro.”
NSW Transport Minister John Graham noted the Airport Terminal Station “will be among the busiest on the line and play a major role in the success of our city’s new international airport.”
