A $82.5 million contract for the St Marys Station transformation project, part of the Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport mega-project, has been awarded.
Laing O’Rourke was awarded the contract to build a new footbridge at the station.
The Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport project is jointly funded by the Australian and NSW governments at an estimated cost of $10.5 billion, with the Australian Government contributing $5.25 billion.
Work on the footbridge is expected to commence in April 2023 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
Federal Minister of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King, said, “The 55-metre-long concourse will provide customers with fast and easy connections to all areas of the station.
“New metro rail will be the transport spine for the Western Parkland City.
“St Marys Station will have an important role to play as a major transport gateway that will connect the Western Parkland City to the rest of Sydney.
“Thousands of people are expected to move through St Marys Station each day once metro services start and the new footbridge is key to keeping Western Sydney moving.”
The fully accessible concourse will enable commuters to seamlessly transfer between new metro platforms and suburban trains on the T1 Western Line.
It will also link to a new pedestrian plaza at the northern end of the footbridge and allow commuters to transfer from the newly expanded multi-storey carpark at Harris Street.
The addition of a new plaza and entry on the northern side of the existing rail corridor will provide quick and easy access to the existing station and generally improve connectivity in St Marys.
This space will include green areas, kiss and ride, bicycle storage and the opportunity for future development.
New South Wales Minister of Transport, Veterans and Western Sydney, David Elliott, said, “The Western Sydney Airport line will have six new metro stations linking new communities in the west and provide fast travel times, including a 15-minute metro trip from St Marys Station to the new Western Sydney International Airport.
“Beyond fast and reliable metro journeys, this city-shaping transport investment will generate jobs closer to home, open doors for local businesses and support the needs of this fast-growing region.
“Sydney Metro is a game-changer for Western Sydney and its benefits will be felt for generations to come.”
The Federal and New South Wales governments have a shared objective to have the Western Sydney Airport line operational when the airport opens for passenger services in late-2026.
