A $500 million upgrade has begun on roads around Sydney’s Northern Beaches Hospital to improve travel times and ease congestion around the future health precinct.

New South Wales Premier, Mike Baird, said the upgrade will include new overpassess underpasses, widened roads and improved public transport corridors.

“The Northern Beaches Hospital has been spoken about for decades so it’s great to finally see not only a new world class hospital, but the roads to support it, becoming a reality,” Mr Baird said.

“We’re investing $500 million to ensure residents can safely and reliably access the hospital and boost capacity on our roads here on the northern beaches.”

Mr Baird said the upgrade is expected to reduce travel times by up to 30 per cent in 2018.

New South Wales Minister for Roads, Duncan Gay, said, “It takes years to plan, approve and prepare for major infrastructure projects like this one – but when you see big construction happening, the upcoming benefits seem like more of a reality.

“There are about 80,000 motorists travelling in this area daily at the moment with even more expected when the hospital opens – ensuring the surrounding 6.8km road network was improved was a priority.

“We’ve done a fair amount of preparation work and now we are going to get on with the big stuff.

“In coming months motorists will see major earthwork along Warringah road and work on the new shared path bridges at Forest Way and Hilmer street.”
