Darren Cleary will step down as Managing Director of Hunter Water in late October to take the helm at Sydney Water, following a five-year term marked by major infrastructure and regulatory milestones.
Cleary’s leadership since 2020 saw the rollout of the Lower Hunter Water Security Plan, initiation of the Belmont Desalination Plant, and delivery of Hunter Water’s submission to IPART’s recent pricing determination. His tenure also spanned drought and flood events, along with emerging contamination challenges such as PFAS.
“Darren has made an outstanding contribution to Hunter Water and our region,” said Hunter Water Chair Elizabeth Crouch.
“Darren’s extraordinary achievements as Managing Director provide a significant positive legacy that positions Hunter Water strongly for the future.”
Cleary is set to begin at Sydney Water in November 2025. His departure from Hunter Water will be effective Friday 24 October.
Jennifer Hayes has been appointed Acting CEO while the Board undertakes an executive recruitment process. Hayes has served as Executive Manager, Finance and Business Performance at Hunter Water for over seven years, with prior roles across FMCG, health, education, and regional development.
“[Cleary’s] leadership has been recognised with this important appointment to Sydney Water,” Crouch said.
