Sydney’s CBD and South East Light Rail has officially begun taking passengers between Circular Quay and Randwick.
The first public passengers boarded the tram just after 10am on Saturday 14 December 2019, departing from Circular Quay before rolling down George Street and onwards through Surry Hills, Moore Park and on to Randwick.
The trip marked a historic moment for Sydney – the first passenger tram journey down George Street in 61 years.
George Street has been transformed into a 1.2km pedestrian boulevard between Hunter and Bathurst streets, replacing the former congestion of bus and car traffic.
Regular services on the L2 will commence on Monday 16 December with standard Opal fares.
The new network will move up to 13,500 commuters an hour during peak time, with one coupled tram holding 450 passengers, which is equivalent to nine standard buses.
