Tasmanian Minister for Infrastructure Rene Hidding announced that the state government’s draft Transport Access Strategy is now available for comment.
The draft strategy sets out the Tasmanian Government’s approach to providing better coordinated passenger transport services for Tasmanians, particularly those disadvantaged through economic circumstances, age or disability.
The strategy identifies the need for the Government to work with Local Governments and form alliances between private, public and not-for-profit transport providers.
This will lead to the development of innovative passenger transport solutions to ensure that people can get to jobs, training and access services.
The draft strategy acknowledges initiatives that the Government is already working on to improve transport access and also establishes a framework for future action.
In what will represent a major advance in access to public transport in Tasmania, the 2016-17 Budget supports Metro to purchase 100 buses that will be compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act.
The buses will be manufactured over the next five to six years.
A range of government, industry and community representatives have been involved in the development of the draft Strategy to identify, and address, the gaps in Tasmania’s transport system to efficiently and effectively meet all transport needs.
