The Western Australian Government has released a tender for engineering and design services for the upgrade of the Claremont train station as part of the METRONET expansion.
The track work expansion will enable trains travelling from the Forrestfield-Airport Link to turn around just west of Claremont Station.
The upgrades will include two additional turnbacks, platform extension and track realignment works.
The upgrades will allow Fremantle Line passengers connecting at Claremont Station and the city a direct link through to the Forrestfield-Airport Link, including Airport Central Station.
Western Australia Minister for Transport, Rita Saffioti, said the upgrades will allow the station to accommodate six-car trains.
“This is an exciting project that will benefit passengers on the Midland and Fremantle train lines, including the students attending the new Inner City College and the future developments around the Subiaco Oval site,” Ms Saffioti said.
“It will ensure the best movement of trains once the Forrestfield-Airport Link is complete, and provide an additional place for drivers to turn trains outside the CBD without having to reach the end of the line.”
In addition to the station and track upgrades, the State Government’s land development agency, LandCorp, has been maximising opportunities for residential and commercial development within the Claremont Station precinct.
The Claremont Station tender follows the start of community consultation for the METRONET upgrade of Bayswater Station, which will enhance the Bayswater town centre and increase public open space.
Initiatives to create METRONET-style precincts are also being planned at other stations between Claremont and Bayswater, such as Meltham, West Leederville, Shenton Park and City West.
