The $34.3 million Bill Fulton Bridge duplication in Queensland has reached a milestone with tenders now open for the new bridging and road duplication.

Queensland Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey said the project would improve safety and traffic flow.

“This highly anticipated project will considerably improve safety and traffic flow by removing a pinch-point on one of Cairns’ key arterial roads and providing control at a busy intersection,” Mr Bailey said.

Queensland Member for Barron River Craig Crawford said more than 30,000 motorists used the Cairns Western Arterial Road every day.

“This project which is creating 97 jobs locally is a high priority for the Palaszczuk Government,” Mr Crawford said.

“Works are expected to include 120 metres of new bridging, 700 metres of duplication between Brinsmead and Redlynch roads and signalisation of the Brinsmead Road intersection.”

Mr Crawford said construction was on track to start in late 2016.

“The tender is expected to be awarded in October and construction well underway before the next wet season,” Mr Crawford said.

Mr Bailey said the project will be one of the first to be delivered under the State Government’s $180 million Significant Regional Infrastructure Projects Program (SRIPP), part of the $2 billion State Infrastructure Fund.

“The fund will support more than 280 regional jobs across the State,” Mr Bailey said.

Tender: bridge duplication and approach works

The Queensland Government is seeking tenders by suitable contractors prequalified to levels R3, F15 major B3 and A3 for the construction of Bill Fulton Bridge Duplication and Approach Works, Cairns Western Arterial Road.

Submissions to tender close 9 September 2016.
