Tenders called for social housing complex construction

The Queensland Government is calling for tenders from South East Queensland construction companies for the construction of a new social housing complex in Yeronga under the new Buy Queensland procurement strategy on eligible South East Queensland construction companies.

Member for Yeerongpilly, Mark Bailey, said the strategy, which came into effect on 1 September 2017, was fantastic news for local businesses looking to tender for the works.

“The project will be delivered as part of the Palaszczuk Government’s $1.8 billion Queensland Housing Strategy, and it will support jobs for a range of trades including electrical, carpentry, plumbing, floor laying, block laying, concreting, plastering, cabinet making and painting,” Mr Bailey said.

“We’ve chosen a site which is close to jobs, transport and community support.

“The construction will be a three storey building serviced by a lift, with a combination of one and two bedroom apartments.

“Importantly, four of these apartments will be built to Platinum Level of Livable Housing Design Guidelines, meaning they can accommodate people who use wheelchairs, with features like wider doorways and halls, as well as lever taps and hobless showers.

“The remaining 16 apartments will be built to Gold Level, which means they can be easily upgraded in the future if needed.

“This project will contribute to building better housing outcomes for the Brisbane community, providing more people with access to safe, secure and affordable housing.”

Minister for Housing and Public Works, Mick de Brenni, said this project was being delivered through the Queensland Government’s $1.8 billion Queensland Housing Strategy 2017-2027.

“Through the Housing Strategy’s Housing Construction Jobs Program, an increased pipeline of work will be delivered to help support the residential construction industry in the Brisbane region and jobs for local tradies,” Mr de Brenni said.

“We’re investing $220 million to build 684 social housing dwellings in the Brisbane region over the first five years.

“This investment will see work for small, medium and large construction businesses, supporting the equivalent of 125 full time local jobs each year over the five years.”
