Toowoomba Regional Council is calling for tenders for the design and construction of the Toowoomba Regional Council Principal Depot.

Council Environment and Community Committee Chair, Geoff McDonald, said the new depot, 24 Nass Road in Charlton, will be a purpose-built, environmentally sustainable facility to meet the current and future needs of the council and the communities it supports.

“The project will deliver a modern facility with improved amenities and a safer, more efficient working environment for all council staff,” Mr McDonald said.

“It will provide features focused on reducing water usage, power consumption and waste generation to ensure sustainability for the long term.

“The new depot will also be home to a new regional State Emergency Service (SES) headquarters.

“The Queensland Government has committed $1 million to council to contribute to the construction of a new SES facility, which will see SES and council resources co-located at Charlton.”

Mr McDonald said the new depot is required to replace aging facilities at Harristown East and West, Oakey and Toowoomba Nursery.

“Council reviewed the suitability of facilities across the region and considered the increasing operational, maintenance and compliance costs associated with running these facilities,” Mr McDonald said.

“Through this process, council has identified the need to replace these existing facilities with a new major depot that meets current requirements.

“This is a major project for the Toowoomba region that will create local jobs during construction and support long-term economic growth.

“I encourage construction businesses based in the Toowoomba region to submit a tender application.”

Tenders close 20 November 2018. Tender responses will be evaluated in November 2018 and the successful tender is expected to be awarded in December 2018.

Construction is expected to start in late 2018 and the new depot is expected to open in 2020.
