The Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure are seeking tenders for a $11.2 million project aiming to improve traffic flow and safety along Main South Road in Aldinga, South Australia.

The project is funded by the Motor Accident Commission and safety improvements will include:

  • A roundabout at the junction of Port Road and Main South Road
  • A two metre wide traffic median with wire rope safety barrier between Port Road and Malpas Road
  • Repositioning of the northbound overtaking lane on Main South Road near Malpas Road
  • Road widening and resurfacing

The section of Main South road between Old Coach Road and Malpas Road in Aldinga is used by nearly 18,000 drivers each day.

Between 2005 and 2014, there were 50 recorded casualty crashes on this section of Main South Road resulting in three fatal, five serious injury and 42 minor injury crashes.

Through this upgrade the State Government aims to reduce the number and severity of vehicle accidents.

Road Safety Minister Peter Malinauskas said, “The State Government is strongly committed to upgrading South Australian roads to improve community safety.

“With the population growth of Aldinga and surrounding areas growing steadily, the number of people using this section of Main South Road has increased and is likely to increase further in the coming years.

“This is an important and necessary infrastructure investment with the dual benefit of boosting safety for road users and improving traffic flow.”

Funding from the Motor Accident Commission follows the release of the DPTI Road Management Plan which identified a number of opportunities to improve road safety, following extensive consultation with the community and stakeholders.

Member for Kaurna Chris Picton said, “This road upgrade will reduce the risks from this dangerous stretch of road which is becoming busier as more residents move into the Aldinga region.

“This is the first intersection to receive an upgrade, with further works required in the future as outlined in the traffic management plan.”

Submissions to tender close 29 September 2016.
