The Victorian Government has received feedback on the Suburban Rail Loop’s (SRL) draft Precinct Visions from thousands of Victorians, helping shape the future of their neighbourhoods.
The SRL’s draft Precinct Visions have been downloaded more than 6,800 times and the online survey visited more than 33,000 times – receiving around 3,400 responses since its release in December 2023.
Consultation on Precinct Visions builds on the consultation SRL has undertaken since 2020 – with more than 19,200 community interactions having their say – whether it be online, face-to-face at workshops or at pop-up stalls.
The online survey results overwhelmingly show that Melbourne communities continue to support SRL, along with the transport and housing benefits it will bring to their suburbs.
More than 80 per cent of respondents called for greener streets in Monash and for the health precinct in Clayton to be expanded. There was also strong support to improve connectivity across Box Hill and Cheltenham – and also connecting central Glen Waverley to existing cycling and walking paths.
The Draft Precinct Visions outlined opportunities for more housing, affordable choices, open spaces and business activity around the six new SRL East stations – following the release of the SRL Discussion Paper for local feedback in August 2023.
By the 2050s, Melbourne is expected to be a city of nearly nine million people – which is the same size London is today. As an integrated transport and planning project, SRL is a key part of how the Victorian Government is working to manage that growth and provide more housing options closer to jobs, services and great public transport.
There will be further opportunities for consultation in the following months as planning continues. Community Panels for each SRL precinct as well as an overarching Youth Panel are also forums for more in-depth conversations.
SRL East from Cheltenham to Box Hill will deliver 26km of twin tunnels and six new underground stations at Cheltenham, Clayton, Monash, Glen Waverley, Burwood and Box Hill – with trains taking passengers by 2035.
2024 is set to be the biggest year yet for SRL, with construction underway at every station and more than 1,200 people already working on the project.
Victorian Minister for Suburban Rail Loop, Danny Pearson, said that the government has been hearing from thousands of people for several years about the Suburban Rail Loop and what it will bring to the state, and that he encourages people to get involved as planning progresses on this city-shaping project.
“Locals know how transformative this project will be and by listening to community feedback we are making sure that the project delivers long-term benefits for each neighbourhood.”
