The towering timber entryways to Melbourne’s West Gate Tunnel are now complete.

The new components mark a major visual and structural milestone for the long-awaited infrastructure project.

The Allan Government confirmed that the twin tunnel portals – topped with 38-metre-high timber net structures – are now structurally finished.

These entry and exit points serve as striking architectural landmarks at the Footscray and Yarraville ends of the tunnel, echoing the area’s maritime and Aboriginal cultural heritage.

Constructed from laminated timber since October 2024, the nets were chosen for their structural strength, low maintenance needs, and reduced environmental impact. Compared to concrete or steel, laminated timber offers a lower carbon footprint. Feature lighting will make the structures prominent visual markers at night, guiding motorists along the new route.

“When the West Gate Tunnel opens this year, it will give motorists a clear choice when travelling across Melbourne’s west – the tunnel or the bridge,” Premier Jacinta Allan said.

“From above or below ground, the West Gate Tunnel Project is taking shape as it races towards completion later this year.”

Above ground, construction is nearing completion on the new bridge and two elevated ramps across the Maribyrnong River. Crews are currently laying asphalt and installing final cladding components.

Underground, over 60 per cent of the safety and traffic control systems are now in place. The final road surface within the twin tunnels will be laid in the coming weeks.

The surrounding areas are also being transformed. New wetlands and open space are under construction near the portals, including pedestrian and cycling links to connect Melbourne’s inner west with the city.

The West Gate Tunnel Project promises to cut travel times by up to 20 minutes and take 9,000 trucks per day off residential streets, delivering a long-needed alternative to the West Gate Bridge.

Local MP Katie Hall added: “The West Gate Tunnel will cut congestion and take 9,000 trucks off local roads every single day – a massive win for residents in the inner west.”
