A key section of Sydney’s M12 Motorway has reached completion, with 14 kilometres of the toll-free road now built.

The New South Wales Government says it has hit a milestone in Western Sydney’s infrastructure rollout ahead of the new international airport’s opening in 2026.

The newly completed section connects the Northern Road to works near Elizabeth Drive at Cecil Park and is now undergoing landscaping, safety installations and signage.

Once complete, the 16-kilometre motorway will provide direct access to Western Sydney International Airport at Badgerys Creek and link it to the broader Sydney motorway network.

This $2.1 billion project is part of the broader Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan. The final two-kilometre section, connecting the motorway to the M7, remains under construction with bridgeworks and interchange ramps underway.

Transport for NSW delivery partners Seymour Whyte and CPB Georgiou Group JV led construction on the motorway’s central and western sections.

More than three million cubic metres of earthworks have been completed, 867,509 plants installed, and 8223 workers employed – including over 5400 local residents.

Minister for Infrastructure Catherine King said the M12 would play a vital role in supporting freight movement once the airport opens.

“This new road will ensure trucks can move quickly and easily from the Airport to sites like the new Moorebank intermodal terminal and the rest of the Sydney road network,” she said.

NSW Treasurer Daniel Mookhey noted the significant transformation of the area.

“Just three years ago, around us were just fields. In that time a new airport has emerged from the cow paddocks, a new motorway nearing completion… and a Metro is connecting the region,” he said.

Once operational, the M12 is expected to carry up to 30,000 vehicles a day.
