The infrastructure sector loves the announcement of a new project and the news of a contract being awarded. From the Westconnex tender award to the $3.5 billion Melbourne Airport expansion, it is clear that in 2018 we’ve been in the middle of an infrastructure boom. Before the year ends, we’ve taken a look back at the top five most-read infrastructure new stories throughout the year.
1) Tender awarded for M4-M5 Westconnex tunnel link
In June, the NSW Government awarded the tender for the construction of the mainline tunnel on the M4-M5 Link to the LSB Joint Venture, comprising Lendlease Engineering, Samsung C&T Corporation and Bouygues Construction.
2) Adelaide Airport terminal to be demolished
Adelaide Airport announced it would demolish the original international terminal building to make way for new developments including a new taxi drop off zone and a forecourt for the Atura Hotel, as well as to create room for future proposed terminal expansion works.
3) $300 million Inland Rail construction contract signed
The $300 million construction contract for the first section of the 1700km Inland Rail Project’s Parkes to Narromine section was signed by a joint-venture between BMD Constructions and Fulton Hogan trading as INLink. Construction of the Inland Rail began in early December.
4) $3.5 billion expansion planned for Melbourne Airport
Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport launched $3.5 billion in redevelopments to cope with booming passenger growth and increased traffic on the Tullamarine Freeway. The plan includes major proposals for a new domestic terminal building, a new runway running east-to-west, a transport hub to streamline the drop-off and pick-up areas for T1, T2 and T3, and an expanded international terminal.
5) Contract awarded for Western Roads Upgrade project
A consortium was selected for the $1.8 billion Western Roads Upgrade Project in Victoria which will significantly reduce congestion for drivers on eight key arterial routes through Melbourne’s west. Netflow consortium was selected as the preferred tender to build the Western Roads Upgrade.
